CBD + Cats

Your cat with all his or her sass and sweetness probably means the world to you. We here at Hemp Tail completely understand, after all, we started this company because we too are pet owners who adore our pets.

We know how heart-wrenching it can be when your feline friend is not feeling well. The last thing you and your baby want to deal with is another trip to the vet. A trip to the vet usually comes with a bunch of medications you've never heard of and have no idea what the side-effects are.

CBD oil is PUR-FECT for cats.

You’ve most likely heard of the incredible benefits of pet CBD and the amazing ways that it is helping with a wide range of issues.

From better relaxation to boosting general wellness, CBD for pets is continuing to make a real name for itself in the world of holistic healing, and it’s no surprise with all of the new research being released each month.

You might be wondering if hemp CBD for pets can help your kitty find relief. This guide is going to tell you all you need to know to get your fur baby back on his or her feet.

Understanding How Pet CBD Works

Just like humans, your kitty’s body uses the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS works to aid in the regulation of a variety of functions including pain, mood, sleep, appetite, and the immune system.

Your cat’s body is constantly sending little chemical messages to receptors throughout his or her body. These messages help perform every basic function from pain management to the release of anxiety relieving endorphins.

The ECS uses natural chemical messages called endocannabinoids. These can be found in cannabis products including CBD. When you or your feline friend consumes a CBD product the endocannabinoids help to slow the sending of messages. This helps because sometimes, especially when kitty is sick or stressed, the receptors become overwhelmed and begin to misfire. This can cause a HUGE variety of issues in your cat’s health.

Here's a short video explaining more.

It's similar to taking a vitamin like a B-complex or vitamin C as it keeps the body functioning properly.

Unlike THC, CBD is considered the non-psychoactive part of cannabis or hemp plant. This means your kitty cat will not be getting high from taking natural CBD.

Types of Hemp CBD for Cats

Pet based CBD products that are safe for your cat including hemp CBD products, which luckily are now fully legal throughout the United States.

Top 3 Types of CBD Products for Cats

CBD Oil for Cats: The most popular CBD products for both pets and humans are hemp CBD oils. This is an oil based concentrate of CBD cannabinoids, usually coming with a little dropper. This dropper allows you to measure exactly how much CBD oil your cat is consuming. This gives you full control every single drop your cat takes.

We’ll get more into specific dosages in a bit, but hemp CBD oil is a great way to introduce CBD into your cat's life.

CBD Spray for Cats: CBD pet sprays are simple to use and great for when you need to travel with your kitty. These little bottles come in special formulas to target specific medical needs such as stress or pain relief. It just takes a few seconds to administer and absorbs very quickly.

CBD Treats for Cats: What kitty doesn't love getting treats every day? Especially if those treats help make your furry friend feel better. Cat treats are the perfect way to introduce your cat to CBD, measure exact dosages, and a sneaky way to include CBD into your cat’s diet.

Research shows the health benefits of CBD products are vast and wide. We still don't know the full possibilities for medical treatment because we need a lot of research on a lot of different illnesses, but here’s what we’ve discovered. CBD for cats can be used to support a current chronic condition or to aid your cats overall health and wellness.

Research heavily suggests CBD oils could play a major role in relief from inflammation and pain of humans and animals alike. CBD may also contribute to aiding in the treatment of:

  • Arthritis
  • Neuropathy pain
  • Nerve-related pain
  • Intestinal inflammation
  • Inflammation on oxidative stress

Many cat owners are reporting after continuous use of CBD their kitties return to a more playful, curious state.

If your cat suffers from either of these issues you know anti-seizure medications present a laundry list of horrifying side-effects. Everything from kidney failure to serious heart issues, thankfully now CBD offers a holistic option for relief.

Studies show CBD oil could support the healing of pets with epilepsy and seizures, even when conventional medications can't. In fact, the first ever FDA approved prescription medication containing CBD was released last year and works to stop seizures immediately.

Possibly one of the most studied medical usages for CBD is its effects on mental health. The research shows CBD can help with anxiety and mental health issues. Side-effect heavy anti-anxiety medications can leave your cat lethargic and sicker than before, but natural CBD has not been shown to have any harsh side-effects.

CBD is helping cats owners travel with their pets with ease, free of stress. Additionally, CBD oil also aids with different phobias, including the common separation anxiety and fear of loud noises/bad weather.

This is particularly helpful during times of chronic illness, pain and even cancer treatments. Harsh treatments like chemotherapy or radiation can cause your cat to stop eating and give kitty horrific nausea. This is extremely dangerous for cats as they should never go more than three days without water or food.

CBD has been researched and shown to provide relief with nausea and a lack of appetite.

Does your cat have a skin condition or is she/he losing her hair in patches? CBD can contribute to a healthier, shinier coat. Many cat owners report rubbing CBD oils directly into the cat’s coat/skin for instant relief. This can work wonders as cats have CBD receptors on the surface of their skin.

CBD for cats aids with the overall wellness of your feline friend. Adding a CBD supplement into your cat's daily diet can vastly improve their day-to-day health.

CBD Dosage for Cats

Hemp Tail highly recommends reading the clinical research and speaking with your pet’s veterinarian before beginning CBD treatments. As with all medications, dosages depend heavily on the size of your kitty. It also depends on the illness you’re using the CBD for as pain management needs a higher dosage than appetite management.

We recommend starting with just 1 mg – 5 mg per 10 pounds of body weight. Choose a starting point and stick with it for at least three days before adjusting dosages.

A holistic veterinarian, Dr. Angie Krause, has been using CBD for treating pets for years and shared some wonderful tips.

Here are basic doses to help get you and your kitty started:

For Arthritis: 0.5 milligrams (mg) of CBD per kilogram of your pet’s weight (0.5 mg/kg) twice a day

For Inflammatory Bowel Disease: 0.2mg/kg twice daily

For Pancreatitis: 0.1mg/kg twice daily and gradually increase to 0.5mg/kg twice daily

For Asthma: 0.5mg/kg twice daily

For Chronic Upper Respiratory Infections: 5mg/kg twice daily

For Seizures: 0.5mg/kg twice daily and gradually increase.

**Dr. Krause notes it takes up to 3mg/kg for CBD to treat cats with seizures**
